The movie theater was fairly barren as we walked out. It was one of those moments, where you just want to see the last bits of the rolling texts to see who … As we entered the lobby, the security officer was holding a tablet talking passionately to a customer over a coffee. We nodded as we passed, which apparently fitted him just perfectly: “Look, this is my girlfriend, Ain’t she gorgeous?” we both responded positively, whether that was an honest response or not.
“Let me show you what I got her for her Birthday last night”. Somewhere between queasy and curious, I accepted, sensing Amelia’s discomfort. “Here’s she is – ain’t that just the coolest theng?”. His very blonde girlfriend held a potent Shotgun – all pink – with Hello Kitty painted on it. “She just loooove Hello Kitty, lemme tell’ya”.
We were a bit quiet until we got to the car. It’s never easy to say anything clever about a foreign culture. And I can’t claim to be familiar with gun culture nor Hello Kitty. So, I’m left to observation. And feeling queasy.
